The crash occurred in Hampshire County shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, March 24 in Hadley.

Prior to the crash, a Hadley Police officer observed the vehicle make a wide turn onto Mill Valley Road from Route 9, briefly leaving the roadway and driving over grass, said Laurie Loisel, spokeswoman for the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.

The officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle, and then observed it fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Mill Valley Road and South Maple Street, Loisel said.

The officer then attempted to stop the vehicle, at which time the driver accelerated out of the officer’s view, she added.

About a half-mile later, the officer came upon the crash scene and immediately radioed for fire and ambulance services to respond, Loisel said.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, a 25-year-old Hampden County man from Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel around 2:20 a.m., she added.

The victim's name has not been provided pending notification of family members.

The crash is being investigated by Hadley Police along with Massachusetts State Police Detectives attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
